Department of Computer Science

About the Department

The department of Computer Science (CS) is the most diverse department within the College. The Discipline of Bachelor of Engineering in Software Engineering is first of its kind to be offered in Pakistan. It is designed to meet the huge unsatisfied demand for professional software engineers, both locally and internationally. It equips the talent with software and hardware skills necessary for success in the modern computing environment. The heart and soul of Military College of Signals is our faculty and staff, who are highly qualified and dedicated to their profession. The faculty has educational background and experience from across the globe thus the result is a vigorous mix of people, ideas, and programs dedicated to enhance the quest for knowledge.

Aim
To Conduct Bachelor of Engineering in Software Engineering , Master of Science in Computer Sciences and Ph.D Programs Under NUST (National University of Science and Technology ), with the objective to produce competent Software Engineers and researchers to face the technological challenges of the 21st century

Area of Emphasis
The CS department focuses on conducting the Bachelor of Engineering Degree course in Software Engineering, consisting of 136 credits to be completed in 4 years. Last six months are utilized for the completion of 7 credits of project work. The undergraduate and Masters program emphasize subjects like Software Engineering, Artificial Intelligence, Computer Graphics, Database Systems, Computer Networks and Operating Systems.

System of Study
The CS department offers Bachelor of Engineering in Software Engineering, Master of Science in Computer Software Engineering and Ph.D programs. A great deal of research and teaching takes place that encompasses theory, technology, practice and applications of software in computer-based engineering systems. To accomplish its cherished mission, CS department places equal weightage on the dissemination of knowledge (teaching), creation of knowledge (research) and the application of knowledge (service). The excellent teacher to student ratio in the department ensures that instruction, research and development are integrated to make the institution innovative and responsive. The undergraduate degree program spans over 4 years to be completed in 8 semester’s duration. Students are tested through quizzes, assignments, midterm and final examinations during a semester and a relative grading system is adopted to gauge their performance. To provide hands on experience, students undertake semester projects and write technical research papers as their semester work. To strengthen their theoretical skill students are given practical exposure of industries by arranging visit to industries and by inviting guest speakers.

The Bachelor of Engineering in Software Engineering (Computer and Network Security) curricula has being developed to respond to the increasing needs for advanced studies in the areas of information security, cryptography, computer and network security and forensic sciences. Due to the technical nature of this program it is well suited for students who are strong in mathematics and related sciences. The unique blend of active learning, lab based courses, and opportunities for independent exploration at the advanced levels will make this program a leader in future Sciences disciplines. It needs not to be emphasized that foundation of strong Doctoral/PG programs are built on the strong UG Program. The students being received here for Doctoral and PG programs of Information Security Department come from diverse educational backgrounds. Availability of hard core expert at UG level will not only enhance the quality of research but will also help in preparing best professionals required for future needs of data handling and security related issues.

The culture of the department is instrumental in giving students technical versatility and a driving intellectual curiosity to carry out applied research leading to the development of science and technology. CS department provides a blend of curricular and co- curricular activities for the students. Software Society and Association of Computing Machinery (ACM) chapters are in place, which provide a forum to enhance the intellectual appetite of inquisitive minds and creative outlooks of the students.
